Chairman’s bit

Well, I have got half way through my year as Chairman of 41 Club and so far I have had nowt (“nothing” in Lancastrian speak) to do. Wonderful. This is however only because of the calibre of the standing committee of Messrs Ward, Shingler, Wilkinson, Slade and Baines who do everything. Great!

One aspect of 41 Club’s organisation really appeals to me and that is the idea of a roving venue. I like 41 Club meetings for the fellowship involved and the opportunity to keep in touch with old friends who I would otherwise not meet. But the other main attraction is meeting in a different venue each month. Beiderbecks, our September venue, is a super, classy place in my view and I really enjoy Wrea Head Hotel which now seems to be on the list for an annual visit. The Fledglings restaurant is always a treat and this year we will have old Beaujolais (i.e. 2012), new Beaujolais (2013) and other wines all presented by somelier John Atkinson. Our December meeting will be at one of the top restaurants in Scarborough according to Trip Advisor, i.e. Jeremys. What a treat! The January meeting is a joint one, I understand, with Round Table to celebrate Burns Night.

Let’s be honest, who would normally visit the above places on a regular basis were it not for 41 Club? We would probably all be sat at home watching Strictly Come Dancing (now there’s a thought!).

Looking ahead, I would propose that we follow Round Table’s example at our AGM in April by wearing black tie. Formal dress adds gravitas to an event in my view. Then when the AGM has been held, we can all have a jolly good rest for four months whilst we recouperate after such an exhausting year.

Yours once in Round Table (but now mercifully not),

Tom Cathcart
Chairman
