January 2018 Meeting: Burns’ Night

Club members and guests from Round Table 88 arrived at the Crescent Hotel to be greeted by an imposing figure with ginger hair poking out from under a Tam o’Shanter. This person, on closer inspection, turned out to be Tom Cathcart, or Tommy Burns as he became known later in the evening.

Due respect was given to the Scottish Bard with members dressed in black tie (except one whom we won’t mention but I am looking at you, Richard Clark). The Haggis was duly piped in with due ceremony, the Piper going on to make his Address to the Haggis with suitable dramatic oratory.

Fair fa’ your honest, sonsie face,
Great chieftain o the puddin’-race!
Aboon them a’ ye tak your place,
Painch, tripe, or thairm:
Weel are ye worthy o’ a grace
As lang’s my arm

During the long-armed grace the warm-reekin’, rich Haggis was put to the sgian-dubh (dirk or dagger) and despatched. After which, members enjoyed a fine menu of:

Haggis, Tatties and Neeps starter
Steak Pie, with vegetables
Cranachan

The Chairman took the opportunity early in the evening to alert members to the potential of undercover Financial Times reporters in disguise. He warmly welcomed the Chairman of Round Table, Asif Firfirey, and his significant entourage, to the meeting. Job done, he then proceeded to drown his Newcastle United Nil sorrows in Scotch (Black and White brand).

John White gave a fine rendition of “The Selkirk Grace”. Tommy Burns, in between the music, provided an excellent talk on Rabbie Burns, his life, his work, and his love-life.

The raffle of a bottle of malt, won by somebody who wasn’t me, raised a substantial sum towards the Club’s charitable efforts.

TC provided even more whisky to propose a toast to Mr Burns, to the Haggis, to Round Table, and to as many good causes as we could think of until it ran out.

All in all, a fine evening of good food, drink and fellowship, courtesy of the Crescent team and our Piper, suitably orchestrated by Messrs Cathcart and White, to whom grateful thanks were given (and, of course, a toast of whisky proposed).

Yours aye

David Henderson

Ps Sincere apologies that, due to a technical hitch, the video of the Haggis entering the room with the Piper has not rendered. This is a complete cock-up by the Acting Under-Assistant Deputy Stand-in Substitute Roving Club Reporter. He should be sacked and never asked to do it again. Video of TC’s speech is below the gallery.

January 2017 meeting report: Burns’ Night

Burns’ Night has come around again and the Yorkshire Coast College Fledglings restaurant did us proud as usual with a fine meal on a Scottish theme.

Before the nosh itself the traditional piper played in the Haggis and our own David (Mc Sporran) Henderson addressed the wee beastie and sent it to Haggis heaven with suitable rhyme and a sharp knife.

The meal comprised of a starter of Haggis and bashed Neeps and Champit tatties or the veg alternative.

Main course was a very tasty dish of venison with potato purée and peppercorn sauce or again the veggie instead.

Pudding was exceptional comprising four Scottish deserts including a popular dram of the Highland hard stuff. Followed by Typhoo Tips or coffee and some lovely chocs.

Our esteemed Chairman thanked the efficient catering staff for the fabulous meal.

The forthcoming meeting at the Copper Horse was promoted when we will have the pleasure of hosting a visit of the National President, Barry Durman. Later meetings are to include a tour of the new lifeboat house and a fish supper.

Member of Scarborough Round Table were thanked for joining us.

The evening followed with the usual loyal toast.

Burns Night Report January 2016

Report on Burns Night Meeting at Fledglings Restaurant on 14 January 2016

A pleasing 27 members of 41 Club including several members not seen for some time and 5 members of Round Table attended the early Burns Night Meal at Fledglings Restaurant at Yorkshire Coast College which Chairman Richard described as a 41 Club meeting with Round Table in attendance as guests. There were 2 other guests in attendance Ed Asquith and all the way from Australia Alan Gammel.

An enjoyable meal made up of typical Scottish ingredients including smoked salmon, haggis, neeps, taties, venison, cranachan and cloutie dumpling was well cooked and served by Yorkshire Coast Colleges second year catering students who were thanked by Chairman Richard for their sterling efforts on behalf of the members.
Tim Draper from Round Table addressed the haggis before stabbing it with a knife in time honoured tradition using a knife provided by the College and not the dirk he had stuffed down his sock and for entertainment after the meal Jim McCann also from Round Table read a mercifully short poem by the great Scottish bard called “Bottle and Friend”
Included with the meal was a shot of whisky. Several attempts were made by whisky aficionados to identify the whisky. Was it from Speyside or Islay – only for their pretentiousness to be exposed when one of the students appeared from the kitchen carrying a bottle of bog standard Bells!
The meeting concluded with reports from the various officers including one from the Sports Officer Jim Hughes reporting that regrettably doe to the recent wet weather all games involving members of the Club had had to be postponed but he did promise a full programme of sporting events as soon as the weather improved and ended with the usual toast to RTBI

Thanks Ian, Ed (SB)

Meeting report: Burns’ Night at Fledglings, 22 January 2015

Hoots mon, it’s a braw, bricht, moonlicht nicht, well and it was such a night when we all arrived at Yorkshire Coast College for a traditional Burns night supper. I STILL don’t understand why the English find the need to celebrate Burns’ night, heavens we will soon have a Dylan Thomas breakfast or a Wordsworth weekend.

Anyway I digress, the evening was well attended with 29 members, including 5 tablers (minus their Chairman and Vice Chairman) present, mostly in dress suits and a small number in skirts. The 4 who did not apologise know who they are and their financial contribution to the evening was very much appreciated by all who attended.

The evening commenced with a piper who piped the haggis in and one of the chaps in skirts said a few words, mostly in a foreign language and then grace was read (?) by the youngest of the visiting Tablers and we all sat down to a 5 course feast.

The starter being smoked salmon with Bellinis, followed by Haggis, bashed neeps (poor things) and champit tatties (no idea what they are but they were delicious).

The main course was venison followed by a plate of miniature Scottish deserts then coffee and petit fours. The meal was beautifully served by the students of the college who year after year still provide a high standard of service.

Once the coffee was finished it was then down to business and our secretary was called upon to report: Caw canny (meaning “Go easy/Don’t overdo it”) was his message so he didn’t overdo it and sat down.

Out from the crowd came “Gie’s a shot then! (meaning “Let me have a turn now”) and it was the finance officer who proclaimed all paid up and then sat down.

Finally it was the catering officer who reminded us all of the next meeting at Tuscany Two on February 12th.

The meeting concluded with RTBI.

And for those of you who did not attend:

“Ye missed yersel last night” meaning “You missed out on a good time last night”

Report kindly submitted by Jim Hughes and translated from the original Welsh by our resident interpreter, Dai Hard-Two.
