Aalten Club Weekend Visit

Past Chairman Peter’s post hot off the press.

The recent medieval themed Aalten visit Saturday evening dinner at Ox Pasture Hall turned out to be a splendid, if somewhat chaotic, evening out. After a little light prinking at Chairman Charlie’s abode, your humble correspondent arrived in time to hear Table Chairman Dave Robinson deliver a speech detailing the understandable difficulties of organising such an event with only 6 members. The Aalten table is a little more fortunate with 15 members. 41 Club mustered 8 members and their significant others for the evening, although Dominic and Nicky Grunwell were accompanied by members of their family, and a visiting Dutch family. The acoustic medieval band played throughout, which left me wondering when they might get around to plugging in. Judging by the reception this comment received, this was something they had clearly heard before! So far the only thing that wasn’t medieval was the bar prices, which put a dent in several wallets.

The meal for the evening was enjoyed, and then after that the band insisted that all should do some medieval style dancing, an invitation that was enthusiastically taken up (by most).

After enjoying this, we got to the start of the ‘entertainment’ we had been promised. Scarborough Round Table’s presentation was a sword in the stone fantasy (well in this case not a stone, but a barrel), with the sword finally being released by the Aalten Chairman. The Aalten effort was difficult to decipher, being the visiting tablers lined up dressed in boiler suits, wearing enormous wooden clogs. They then proceeded to stomp the clogs in an increasingly frantic fashion. What did it all mean? Haven’t a clue. Anyway, the Aalten Chairman then delivered his speech, which was enthusiastically received. He then presented an enormous single clog, which presumably will now reside in the back of someone’s garage. Incidentally, I did notice that Charlie came home with a pair of the regular size large clogs, which he has promised to wear at the next 41 Club meeting (stomping optional).

Owing to alcohol being taken, this description only bears a passing resemblance to the actual evening, but you get the general idea. Overall a fun evening, and hopefully the whole weekend has nicely set up the next visit of the Scarborough Table to Aalten in a few years’ time.

September 2022 Meeting: Tapas

The next meeting is the Tapas evening on Thursday September 15th at the usual time at La Roca on Blands Cliff. Pre-meeting at the Merchant starting 6.30-7pm. Tapas meetings usually go down well and the reviews for La Roca are consistently very good, and so hopefully a good attendance for this meeting. Historically the attendance for the September meeting can be a bit unpredictable. Let’s buck that trend and have good numbers for this one.

Apologies by Friday 9 September please

Report: Scarborough Round Table host a successful 80th Charter celebration

Chairman Richard takes a well-earned snooze - during the Gala Dinner

Chairman Richard takes a well-earned snooze – during the Gala Dinner

I must congratulate Scarborough Round Table on a highly successful 80th Charter celebration.

Although numbers were down, everything went well and the atmosphere was great. As you can imagine, our Dutch visitors threw themselves into the celebrations with enthusiasm.

Our 41 Club guests arrived on Thursday evening, flying from Dusseldorf to Leeds; meaning they had less of a rush when returning on Sunday; one Tabler arrived by car on the Saturday but the rest flew into Leeds on Friday morning and were taken via York marina, Sam Smith’s brewery and various hostelries to arrive at the appointed welcome point, the Downe Arms. Thanks to all those who provided the transport from and to the airport.

On Friday evening, we were joined by Tablers’ families at Betton Farm for a Hog Roast and music; an early start to the evening was designed to allow for a good rest before the morrow. Some took advantage of that!

We were not sure what to expect for Beach Games, the following morning but, whilst some played badminton, others appreciated the opportunity to visit the MAP site for more boystrous fun with zombies and paint-balling, thanks to new Tabler David Hooper (inducted on the Saturday evening). Lunch followed; fish & chips at the Blue Crush. And so to Scarborough Castle for an entertaining, interactive history lesson from our guide, Eliott; a man who clearly enjoys his job and brought the Castle to life!

All appreciated the free time in the late afternoon in the excellent weather to prepare for the main event of the weekend.

Richard & Daphne at the Crown Spa put on a great event for us; thanks to them.

Superbly choreographed by MC Chris Redford the evening ran smoothly with good food and service, the room attractively decorated and Magic Mike doing his table magic followed by a disco.

Good speeches from Terry Cooper, 41 Club National President, the two Table Chairmen Ben and Rogier, and a Shingler Special as he slurred his monologue.Presents were exchanged: fine clogs from Aalten Club and an 88 deckchair from Scarborough. The traditional cabarets were enjoyed by the assembled company and several Scarborough Tablers’ wives were heard to comment that Dutch Tablers dance!

The more prudent guests retired in good time, but the Master of Ceremonies took his duties seriously and left the Casino at dawn.

Breakfast at the Crown Spa was followed by words of farewell and appreciation of a good weekend and promises to reconvene in Aalten in 2½ years time.

Scarborough 41 Club special guests were (on the Friday evening and Sunday breakfast) Mick Thorpe and Tom Pindar (Saturday evening) with, of course, their good ladies Sheila and Margery. Mick and Tom were two of the original party that went to Holland and began twinning with Aalten all those years ago.

Thank you, Ben, and all your members for all your efforts.

Richard Grunwell
Chairman, Scarborough 41 Club

Special Table meeting: guest speaker – M S Thorpe Esq – 17 March 2015

round_table_rondel_plus_nameMick has been invited to speak at the Table meeting to be held on Tuesday, 17 March 2015.

He will be talking to Table about the history of Round Table in Scarborough. This is an appropriate subject for many reasons, not least that it is the Aalten twinning visit in September of this year.

41 Club members are most welcome to come along to support Mick and to hear him speak. I will be there, and I hope you will, too.

Please let either Mick or me know if you can attend and we will inform Table.
