March Meeting: The Case – A Rummage Through A Doctor’s Bag

We have Dr. Gordon Hayes as the speaker at the meeting next Thursday 16th March at the Yacht Club. Gordon will reflect on his career in medicine in a presentation called “The Case – A Rummage Through A Doctor’s Bag”.  Plan is to start at 7.30pm with Gordon’s presentation, lasting for 30 minutes or so, and then to eat afterwards (we are having a 3 course meal). I would suggest that anyone who fancies a drink beforehand could meet at the Yacht Club from 7pm onwards.

January 2018 Meeting: Burns’ Night

Club members and guests from Round Table 88 arrived at the Crescent Hotel to be greeted by an imposing figure with ginger hair poking out from under a Tam o’Shanter. This person, on closer inspection, turned out to be Tom Cathcart, or Tommy Burns as he became known later in the evening.

Due respect was given to the Scottish Bard with members dressed in black tie (except one whom we won’t mention but I am looking at you, Richard Clark). The Haggis was duly piped in with due ceremony, the Piper going on to make his Address to the Haggis with suitable dramatic oratory.

Fair fa’ your honest, sonsie face,
Great chieftain o the puddin’-race!
Aboon them a’ ye tak your place,
Painch, tripe, or thairm:
Weel are ye worthy o’ a grace
As lang’s my arm

During the long-armed grace the warm-reekin’, rich Haggis was put to the sgian-dubh (dirk or dagger) and despatched. After which, members enjoyed a fine menu of:

Haggis, Tatties and Neeps starter
Steak Pie, with vegetables
Cranachan

The Chairman took the opportunity early in the evening to alert members to the potential of undercover Financial Times reporters in disguise. He warmly welcomed the Chairman of Round Table, Asif Firfirey, and his significant entourage, to the meeting. Job done, he then proceeded to drown his Newcastle United Nil sorrows in Scotch (Black and White brand).

John White gave a fine rendition of “The Selkirk Grace”. Tommy Burns, in between the music, provided an excellent talk on Rabbie Burns, his life, his work, and his love-life.

The raffle of a bottle of malt, won by somebody who wasn’t me, raised a substantial sum towards the Club’s charitable efforts.

TC provided even more whisky to propose a toast to Mr Burns, to the Haggis, to Round Table, and to as many good causes as we could think of until it ran out.

All in all, a fine evening of good food, drink and fellowship, courtesy of the Crescent team and our Piper, suitably orchestrated by Messrs Cathcart and White, to whom grateful thanks were given (and, of course, a toast of whisky proposed).

Yours aye

David Henderson

Ps Sincere apologies that, due to a technical hitch, the video of the Haggis entering the room with the Piper has not rendered. This is a complete cock-up by the Acting Under-Assistant Deputy Stand-in Substitute Roving Club Reporter. He should be sacked and never asked to do it again. Video of TC’s speech is below the gallery.

February 2017 meeting report: RNLI visit

41 Club visits the new Scarborough Lifeboat House

The February 41 Club visit took the form of a visit to the new RNLI Lifeboat House at Scarborough’s Sandside  to have a look at their new facilities.

The RNLI lifeboat crews showed us the new Shannon class lifeboat which cost £2.3m – and looked it – being in fantastic condition and very shiny.

The new lifeboat had been funded by donations from the F W Plaxton Charitable Trust and will be named “Frederick William Plaxton”. The RNLI fundraising appeal also raised £200,000 towards the cost of a bespoke launch and recovery vehicle for the new lifeboat.

The building includes a revamped shop and an exhibition space where those who visit can learn about the history of the lifesaving charity. There are also upgraded volunteer crew facilities with extra space for lifesaving training and an up-to-date drying room for their kit.

The Shannon class lifeboat is the first modern RNLI all-weather lifeboat to be powered by water jets and not propellers. Capable of 25 knots, the Shannon is 50% faster than the lifeboats it replaces, so ensuring that those in need are reached even faster.

The Shannon needs a bespoke launch and recovery system. She is designed to be mostly launched and recovered from a beach but, without the right launching equipment, this is impossible. The RNLI worked with Supacat Ltd in developing a system capable of launching and recovering the Shannon class lifeboat from the beach at all states of the tide.

After the tour of the Lifeboat House tour we were treated to a fish and chip supper at the Golden Grid which was as tasty as ever.

October 2015 Club Meeting : Children’s Wish

For our October event the venue was The Crescent, the food was first class as ever with a starter of

Salmon Pate, a huge Barnsley Chop for mains and Chocolate Brownie for pud, who could ask for

more ?!

Catering officer Simon was in buoyant mood having guessed the attendance correctly and only two

seats without back sides in place.

The speaker was Tabler Allan from Coventry 23 Round Table who are promoting the Children’s Wish

charity which aims to bring dreams to reality for seriously ill children. Allan explained that the

difference of Children’s Wish to similar charities is that each wish big or small is customised to the

wish of the child in question, and also allows siblings and up to two adults to join the child in the

experience.

Children’s Wishes have been such as trips to Disneyland and meeting their favourite characters

when there which make a big difference to the children and their families.

Scarborough 41 Club and Scarborough Round Table are to hold a joint fundraising evening at

Scarborough Rugby Club on 20 November for Children’s Wish. The evening is to be a Race

Night with a Pie and Pea supper. Cost £ 15.00 per head although the November meeting subs will

cover the cost for 41 Club members and partners.

Members are encouraged to bring wives/partners and guests. Simon Lockley is the main promoter

and would appreciate numbers to the Treasurer by 14 November.

Special Table meeting: guest speaker – M S Thorpe Esq – 17 March 2015

round_table_rondel_plus_nameMick has been invited to speak at the Table meeting to be held on Tuesday, 17 March 2015.

He will be talking to Table about the history of Round Table in Scarborough. This is an appropriate subject for many reasons, not least that it is the Aalten twinning visit in September of this year.

41 Club members are most welcome to come along to support Mick and to hear him speak. I will be there, and I hope you will, too.

Please let either Mick or me know if you can attend and we will inform Table.

Our next meeting is 13 November 2014: The bombardment of Scarborough 1914

Scarborough_bombardment

On 16 December 1914, German battlecruisers bombarded the town, causing great damage and the loss of 18 lives. Many more were injured. They then moved on to Whitby.

Local historian Keith Johnston will describe the events to us.

Please note: this will be an early meeting – 6.45pm for 7pm with the talk before the meal.

The meeting is at Scarborough Rugby Club.

Also note: due to the requirements of the venue, any apologies for the meeting are needed one week ahead of time, ie by the end of Thursday, 6 November.
