Sad News: Eddie Gregory RIP

It is with great sadness that I have to inform you that my great friend and stalwart of Scarborough Round Table, Eddie Gregory, passed away on Thursday evening.

I am sure that we all have wonderful memories of Eddie. When something needed doing for Round Table, Eddie was always to the fore, particularly if it needed his ingenuity as an engineer. I remember him waging a one-man war to protect the Round Table wishing well in Peasholm Park with all sorts of complex metal contraptions.

He would always be very welcoming to new members and made sure that they were fully involved in the club. Socially he was the glue that held together many of our gatherings.

I am sure that you will join me in sending Ros, Sarah and Stuart our commiserations and I know that our thoughts will be with them at this difficult time.

Nigel Sheppard

Eddie was Chairman of Scarborough 41 Club in the 2000/1 year.

Eddie was a great friend during all my time in Table and afterwards. Whether it was organising Rallies, putting on cabarets (including stripping down to his undies), Eddie was always there and always ready to play his part and do his bit. And of course, whenever our ladies were called upon, with the lovely Ros by his side.

I don’t remember him being ruffled by anything, and he took part in so many of our activities with great humour and joyfulness. He will be much missed by all who knew him.

CANCELLED Raising awareness of Brain Tumour Research and Support

A message from Richard Grunwell:

Please convey to Club Members the proposal, as sanctioned by our Chairman and our Catering Officer, for as many members as possible to congregate on Marine Drive on Thursday, 19 March, by the statue of Freddie at 6.20pm on our way to Anton’s Restaurant.

This is to have a photograph taken, with Freddie at the centre, to raise awareness of Brain Tumour Research and Support (BTRS), of which Ellie’s Fund is now a part.

Each March, BTRS, runs Flat Cap Friday, and Freddie wear a very large one!

The photo will then be submitted to BTRS. BTRS is a Yorkshire-based Charity.

Please try to be there wearing a Flat Cap (Dominic has several spare).

CANCELLED March 2020 meeting: Steak dinner at Anton’s Restaurant

Eagerly anticipated, your Catering crew have organised a steak dinner at Anton’s Restaurant on Sandside, to sit down 7.30pm on Thursday, 19 March. Anton specialises in chargrilled steak where all the meat comes from Stepney Hill Farm. Lip smackingly tasty (just invented that expression). Snake head soup from Hueiw province China is temporarily off the menu.

Where to go on Thursday, 19th March at 7.30pm

The Evening
We meet at the Golden Ball at 6.30pm to sample yet again some of the finest beer and lager (and cheapest) that Scarborough has to offer. Sam Smith’s hand pulled ale must be one of the very best beers in the northern hemisphere. The Pure Brewed lager is to die for (hell, that’s bad grammar – should have said ‘for which to die’). 😉

Anton’s
The plan is to meet up just before 7.30 in Anton’s for hopefully a terrific steak dinner. Any early arrivers can put away a couple of beers in the ground floor bar and we will be shown to the first floor of the restaurant, which we have to ourselves, at 7.30pm.

The Meal
We start with Salmon and Cod Fishcakes served with Tartar Sauce (being as how the snake head soup isn’t on at the minute) then we move onto the Main Course!
8oz rump steaks with garlic butter and chips will be served, done Medium. If anyone wishes for eg Medium Rare or Well Done then he must tell Tom Cathcart at least 48 hours before the event! Your Catering Team aim to please but anyone wanting Well Done will be assigned to the dunce’s table in the corner.

Liquor
Included in the price is an excellent Anton’s house red Merlot wine which is very flavoursome and this will be on the table upon arrival. Any other drink needs to be paid for separately. Even nicer is a fabulous Argentinian Malbec, for a few quid more but… scrummy.

Apologies
As usual apologies need to be posted on the Club’s website by 12 noon on Friday, 13 March to avoid paying for a meal you didn’t eat. Do send your steak preferences directly to Tom (text message, email, or mobile call, whatever,) unless you are happy with medium.

NB this is an update of an earlier article that got the headline date wrong due to the acting, temporary, part-time stand-in editor being asleep at the wheel and living in the past. You would have thought that he would have known that St David’s Day had ticked by.

Attendance at 41 Club meetings 2019-20

There have been 5 meeting so far (ignoring the BBQ in August) and we have 50 members so it’s easy to work out percentages of attendances by club members. Even I can do that!

The details are as follows:

100% attendance 4 members
80% attendance 3 members
60% attendance 12 members
40% attendance 6 members
20% attendance 15 members
0% attendance 9 members

Here are some more stats showing the meetings and the percentages of club members attending:
Tapas 32%
Bryerstones 50% (well done Nigel!)
Eastern Paradise 38%
Az – Turkish 44%
Tops Chinese 32%

This works out as 39.2% average member’s attendance.

Food for thought gentlemen!

Catering Officer

December 2019 Meeting: Turkish Christmas Meal

December’s 41 Club meeting took the form of a superb Turkish Christmas meal (Turkey strangely absent – Ed).

Club members arrived at the family-run Turkish Columbus Ravine restaurant “Az” which is an excellent fit for the club as given that our numbers allowed us to have it solely to ourselves.

The starter was an appetizing mixed cold Meze of Turkish dishes accompanied by pitta bread. The starter all in all was excellent and almost a meal in itself.

The main course for most was Inick, a traditional Turkish dish being a delicious knuckle of lamb accompanied by vegetables; options were available for non-lamb fans.

The evening was well attended by members and guests included Richard Kirby (former 88 Tabler) and John Price. It was good to see Rick Lumby looking well restored to good health.

Due to the absence of the Chairman (who had a better offer for the evening), the meeting was ably chaired by Vice Chairman David Ascough.

Summer 2019 BBQ

The BBQ had been arranged for Saturday 10 August but after reviewing the weather forecast earlier in the week which showed gale force winds and rain, it was postponed until the Sunday.

A team of 41 Club members arrived on the Sunday morning to erect the marquee and set up the tables, chairs etc. ready for the guests to arrive from 5pm onwards.

The BBQ food was planned around a Caribbean theme with accompanying music. Upon arrival the guests were given a garland around their neck and a choice of rum punch (Tom’s special) or a Prosecco but the rum punch was a popular choice.

The food had been lovingly prepared over a few days by Tom and John and was much appreciated by all.

Grateful thanks to Tom and John for al their hard work and time in planning and providing a magnificent BBQ.
