1188 at National Conference, 1998

Many thanks to Andrew Wilson for this great photo.

Andrew isn’t altogether certain of the date, so if you have better information please let me know.

Also, names of the Tablers and their ladies would be a great addition, if anyone knows them.

Update: Iain Johnson has written in quickly to say:
The picture Andrew Wilson sent you was from Blackpool 1998, the conference following the Scarborough one [in 1997]. Barbara and I went, but we seem to have missed being on that photo. I suspect a lot of the faces are not 1188 though. I don’t know if any are from Stokesley Table as that is where Andrew was at that time. Sorry I don’t have any better memories! ( I do amazingly still have the jacket!)

Visitor to Scarborough from RT India, 1989

Many thanks to Tom Cathcart for keeping this snippet which looks like it came from the Scarborough Evening News, via a copy of Roundabout. I have taken a guess that this was in 1989, the summer of Simon and Phil’s year as Chairman of 88 and 1188 respectively, but if they or anyone else can provide any additional information, that would be great,

Extracted text:

A Scarborough man welcomed one of the world’s top Round Table figures to his home. Mr John Barton, who retired to Scarborough four years ago, was the founder of the Round Table in India in 1957.

And the past president of India’s now-flourishing Round Table organisation, Mr R. Chander Shekhar, decided to visit Mr Barton during an overseas tour.

Mr Shekhar, who is now vice-president of the World Council of Young Men’s Service Clubs, enjoyed entertainment organised by Scarborough’s two Round Table group chairman, Mr Simon Ward and Dr Phil Rigg, during his stay.

Mr Barton, of The Glade, Scarborough worked for a printing ink manufacturer in Madras in the 1950s and founded the first Indian Round Table in that town in 1957.

There are now 100 Round Table groups in India, which raise huge sums for charity every year, and often donate money to Mother Theresa’s work in the country.

The visitor and his wife, Val, enjoyed a three-day visit to Scarborough, and have now set out from London on extensive travels to many countries, including Canada, Iceland and Singapore, before returning to Delhi, where Mr Shekhar is a prominent businessman.

88’s Chairman’s Night Songbook

Many thanks to Sue for sharing this fine “Souvenir Songbook of a Musical Feast” from Gordon Truefitt’s Chairman’s Night.

88’s Aalten Weekend Programme, 21-23 September 1990

Thank you to Tom Cathcart for this excellent souvenir of one part of his year as Chairman. This now replaces the earlier photographs of some of the pages kindly supplied by Steve Slade.

88’s Roundabout 16 June 1995

Another souvenir from Tom Cathcart. This will bring back fond memories for some of the journey to and then home from the Denmark Eights meeting. The latter was via Germany, Belgium, France and the Channel Tunnel instead of across the sea to Newcastle as planned. Missing or mis-read documents featured heavily.

88’s Roundabout May/June 1993

Many thanks again to Tom Cathcart.

This edition includes an item I am bound to mention, when we went to Blackpool for the 1992-1993 National Conference and AGM. 88 was presented with the cup for the best Table magazine for the past year (ahem!). That was some conference.

It is difficult to be sure of the edition date but it is early June, maybe, or in May of 1993.

Stuart Baines was Roundabout Editor during 1993-94.

88’s Roundabout 29 July 1995

Thanks again to Tom Cathcart for keeping this memento. If you were in or around Table in 1995, open at your peril.

I think the Editor of the time was Ian Rhodes, unless anyone knows better?

European 8s’ Meeting, 1991

Many thanks to Tom Cathcart for preserving this souvenir (excellent use of French word there) and the associated cutting.

This photograph appeared in the Gazette de Liége of Mardi, 2 Juillet 1991 with the following caption.

Representatives of seven countries met this weekend in Liège, at the initiative of the Round Table 88. This euromeeting, as we say now, brought together more than 120 people: Germans, Finns, Swedes, Norwegians, Dutch , English, French and Belgians.  After a visit to the city and its surroundings, notably around the “County of Dalhem”, a reception awaited the guests at the Literary Society.  On our photo (Planchar [I assume the photographer – Ed]), the participants are in front of the University buildings, cheerfully gathered before the return.

Close inspection will show a number of Scarborough ne’er-do-wells amongst the assembled group. [That wasn’t in the article – Ed.] [Although maybe it should have been – Ed.]

88’s AGM, 1977

Many thanks to Geoff Winn for the photograph, and for labouring on the names of those present.

Geoff said it was very difficult to put names to this photo because of the place it was taken, on the staircase.

He has started from the front row to see how it goes:
Left to right:

Second Row: Ray Pinder, Franklyn Garvey,   ?  , Paul Whittaker, Gordon Truefitt
Third Row: Barry Hodgson, John Edwards, Roy Hulse, Bill Newman
Fourth Row: Richard Appleton, John Wray, Richard Beaumont, Jeremy Woodcock
Getting more difficult!

Sixth Row: Martin Johnson, Chris Coole,   ?   , John Brinkler, John Pilgrim, Richard Gretton, Peter Wilkinson, Barrie Dean, Andrew Boyes, David Jeffels, Brian Dew
Very Back: Geoff Baines,   ?   , (extreme right) Peter Lenel

Geoff has done sterling work. Can you help with the missing names?

1188 at the Area Rally, 1987

With many thanks to Belinda Denton for the memory.

Mike Shingler recalls:
Scarborough 1188 members from left to right:
Mike Shingler
Malcolm Smith
Jeff Parvin
Gordon Williams
Nick Bentley
Richard Clark
Barry Denton (Scarborough 88)
Simon Green

Accompanied by our respective ladies.

We performed a ballet which Lesley [Mike’s wife] choreographed, where we 1188/88ers were playing the female ballerina parts and our wives played the male roles.

Great times.

Many thanks to Mike and to Malcolm Smith for the background. Mike thinks this was from 1983 or 1984 but Malcolm Smith thinks later, during 87-88. Do you know?
