Gentlemen – due to a reference on our website to the Club having been founded in 1957 the question has been asked whether the 70th Charter Night should take place in 2027 and not 2026 as intended.
In view of the importance of celebrating our 70th Charter in the correct year your ever assiduous Vice Chairman made enquiries of National as to the date of formation of the Club. After searching the archives at National the 41 Club National Honorary Archivist (who knew!) has now provided Vice Chairman Simon with copies of 2 documents held by National: one is a list of the 41 Clubs who became affiliated to National in 1955-56 which includes Scarborough and the other is the name of the Club Secretary in July 1956 namely W E Hopwood of 126 Stepney Road together with the Club’s meeting place namely the Pavilion Hotel.
If the Club was affiliated to National during 1955-56 it would follow that the Club’s first AGM would have been held in 1956 which would make the AGM in 2026 the 70th AGM which does of course correspond with the minutes of the AGM with the minutes of the 2025 AGM referred to as the 69th AGM.
Whilst in the absence of actual documentary evidence of the date of formation of the Club such as the minutes of the first AGM which over the passage of time have been misplaced (or perhaps destroyed!) or a register of the date of formation of affiliated 41 Clubs held by National one cannot state definitively that the Club was formed in 1955 making 2026 the 70th anniversary of the Club’s formation but all the available evidence points to this conclusion.
The correct year for holding the 70th Charter is therefore 2026.
The documents received from National will be placed in the Archive section of the website and the reference on the website to 1957 will be corrected to 1955.
