April Meeting – AGM

Yes, yet another year passes, and Chairman Peter was able to relieve himself (it’s an age thing!) of the office chain.

Duly smartened up (following a stern  directive in the Newsletter about decorum, tradition, slipping standards, blah, blah, blah etc), some 21 members, and 1 due to be enrolled member turned up at the very accommodating Crescent Hotel for the AGM. Numbers unfortunately had been hit by a flurry of late apologies from members who had attended the Scalby Easter Walk and subsequently succumbed to COVID, but as John White had already pre ordered the free wine ( a very nice Fleurie and Pinot Grigio), the members who did attended decided the only honourable thing to do was to make sure none was left.

Secretary Mike took control of proceedings and following some very brief reports from the Secretary, the Treasurer, the catering officer and the membership officer, Darren, our sports officer was left with 35 minutes to fill! New officers were elected, as per the agenda. Peter, our outgoing Chairman, had the pleasure of enrolling Ben Kitto, a former 88 Tabler, and gave out some fancy French rose (with an acute accent over the e but I can’t find out how to do that without translating the whole page!) to all last year’s committee members.

He then gave a succinct report on how, and where, his year had gone. Peter then passed over the Chain of Office to Charlie Hindle, who then proceeded to tell us how his year would go (he hopes).

A good 3 course meal, supplemented by the plentious wine, enabled the rest of the evening to slip quietly into oblivion.

Why are Aalten Round Table Visiting Scarborough?

A reminder of the background to the connection between Aalten Round Table/41 Clubs and their counterparts in Scarborough.

The first visit to Holland in 1963 was marked by a particular kindness that has remained one of the key features of all such visits since. All seven Scarborough Tablers were able to stay in the homes of Aalten Tablers. The Scarborough contingent still benefited from the impressive linguistic skills of the Dutch and their impressive fluency in English, conversely matched by the poor efforts in Dutch by various Scarborough speakers!

The original English party of ‘1963 spent a week in Holland and built up such a friendship that, before long a return visit by the Dutch to Scarborough was planned. So it was that, in May 1964, four Dutch Tablers from Aalten 88, with their wives, made the crossing to Scarborough.

The fellowship and friendship engendered from those early visits was so warm and mutual that they continue to this day. The two Clubs meet every two and a half years, alternating location. Now visits last over a long weekend, and Round Tablers past and present, with their partners, enjoy a weekend of events to help them to get to know their hosts’ area better and to meet socially. On the Saturday evening there is a formal dinner and dance, although formality soon wavers as liquid hospitality is shared and enjoyed. ln another tradition of the Saturday evening, members of each club ln turn perform a light-hearted (and often badly-rehearsed) sketch or song. Most importantly, the tradition of staying in each othe/s homes has endured since 1963, cemented by many long-lasting friendships, which continue beyond the regular twinning visits.

March Meeting Report – A Rummage through the Doctor’s Bag

The venue for tonight’s meeting was the Scarborough Yacht Club, where we were treated to an excellent 3 course dinner, washed down by various beverages of choice from the bar.

Prior to this, Dr Gordon Hayes, a local retired GP, gave us a brief report on just some of the memorable events from his career, all of which were factual and had not been ‘Doctored’ in any way.

On one occasion he sent a baby with a raised temperature that he had some concerns about into hospital, following a late night call out. A week later, he was surprised to find the infant still in a hospital ward, having been successfully treated for meningitis, confirming that his concerns and split-second decision had been more than justified.

Gordon also handed round various instruments, ranging from a quite expensive ophthalmoscope to a humble tape measure. The latter was used to check anomalies in calf size, which could indicate a Deep Vein Thrombosis. Colin B had some input on the subject, but then being a farmer he does know about calves.

The talk was very well received, as illustrated by the queue of 41 Club members that built up afterwards, wanting to talk about their various ailments…!

Ian Burnett gave a vote of thanks, and asked if Gordon would now be returning to work, following the recent budget change which allowed GPs (and others) to stow away more money into their pension pot without penalty. Gordon considered the question for 2 seconds then replied with a firm ‘No!’

Aalten Visit Celebration Dinner

We have recently had confirmation of some details for the Round Table dinner at Ox Pasture Hall on Saturday 22nd April to celebrate the forthcoming Aalten visit weekend. It will be a 3 course black tie event starting at 7pm, with ‘a bit of entertainment’ from Round Table members, and music. Thankfully, so far, no-one has mentioned a 41 Club sketch to me! Cost is likely to be about £45 per head. At the time of writing this, Round Table are expecting somewhere between 6 and 10 visitors from the Aalten table.

As I remarked previously, it’s disappointing that no 41 Club members are coming for the weekend, but it would be great to show willing at our end and support Round Table with their dinner event. I know some of our members will attend, including myself, and so please make a note in your diary for the 22nd April. Let’s try and make the effort, and get a decent number from 41 Club to this event. I will send details of any changes to the arrangements that may occur.

February Meeting Report – Chinese

Well done China ! The 41 Club February meeting was yet another great success, the evening started with our wetting our whistle, at the Top and Spile where we somewhat overwhelmed the sole barmaid (person surely!) but the beer was excellent as ever when it arrived in my hand.

Crossing to TOPS restaurant we were provided with the traditional Prawn Crackers, followed by a medley of food which was tasty but well disguised as to the meat or otherwise. The mains were each members individual choice which I thought might delay service but need not have worried it was all swiftly provided and tasty as well.

There were two guests, John Price and Ben Kitto.  The forthcoming Aalten visit was discussed, unfortunately it appears that no 41 Members are coming.

Members raised a toast to the sadly deceased Andy Tolley.

March Meeting: The Case – A Rummage Through A Doctor’s Bag

We have Dr. Gordon Hayes as the speaker at the meeting next Thursday 16th March at the Yacht Club. Gordon will reflect on his career in medicine in a presentation called “The Case – A Rummage Through A Doctor’s Bag”.  Plan is to start at 7.30pm with Gordon’s presentation, lasting for 30 minutes or so, and then to eat afterwards (we are having a 3 course meal). I would suggest that anyone who fancies a drink beforehand could meet at the Yacht Club from 7pm onwards.

February 2023 Meeting – Chinese Banquet

The next meeting will be at an old favourite, TOPs Chinese restaurant on Falsgrave, restored to the traditional third Thursday of the month, on Thursday 16th February at 7.30 for 8pm,. We are to have a belated Chinese New Year celebration meal (anyone speak Cantonese? Pre-dinner drinks will be in the Tap and Smile. Apologies should be made via the Club Website by Friday 10 February.

January 2023 Meeting – Dolphins and Stuart

The next meeting will be on Thursday 26th January, probably at the recently opened North Street Kitchen, on err… North Street, Scarborough not Scalby! It’s always good to support a new business venture trying to produce quality food. We haven’t yet decided the start time for this meeting, so to be advised. The alert amongst you will have noticed that this is not the traditional third Thursday of the month, it’s the fourth Thursday. I think we can cope.  We have another speaker for this evening, as our very own Stuart Baines will deliver a talk on his work relating to the study and conservation of Dolphins, Whales and Porpoise that visit the coastal waters off Yorkshire, and more particularly off Scarborough. Stuart will talk about the species we can see and how this has changed over recent years, and how the presence of these animals can benefit our local community. All quite topical really, given the unexpected visit to the harbour by a wandering walrus recently. Top marks to Scarborough Council (for once) for cancelling the New Year’s Eve fireworks display in case the beastie was frightened.
