Report on the annual Quoits Competition held on 25 June 2025

7 members of 41 Club and Farts together with a member of RoundTable, 2 guests and 2 ringers from the Beck Hole Quoits Club including Ivor a previous winner took part in the annual quoits competition held as usual at the Quits Club quoits court on Wednesday 25 June 2025.

The 12 competitors were divided into 6 teams of 2 with each team playing the 5 other teams.

The usual crowd of sheep failed to make their appearance to watch the competition perhaps they knew that the standard of pitching would not make for exiting viewing and decided to give the competition a miss this year.

The sun shone, the insect life remained dormant and the back boards (an innovation since last year) took a severe pounding from misdirected quoits.

After almost 2 hours of several highly competitive games and some not so competitive the winning team was our new Chairman Richard and his guest Phil who were too good even for Ivor. Your reporter’s team came joint last but took some consolation from being the only team to have beaten the winning team and scoring 2 ringers (where the quoit encircles the hob or spike) in 1 pitch.

After toiling away in the hot sun the teams retired to the Birch Inn for a well deserved pint (or 2) and a pie (or 2). An early rumour started by a retired medic that the Inn had run out of pies proved to be unfounded.

While everyone availed themselves of the opportunity of taking their refreshment al fresco by the riverside our Sports Officer Darren presented the winning team with their winner’s medals together with a bottle of Chateau West Ayton for each of them.

Thanks to Darren for arranging the event, the glorious sunshine and in the absence of Stuart acting as the official photographer for the event.

During the evening £100 was raised to be donated (less the cost of the medals and the wine) to the Quoits Club’s chosen charity the air ambulance service.

A good night’s entertainment enjoyed by all.
