Denis Henry Clarke Chapman
Denis was born in Scarborough in 1934. His schooling was at Lisvane and Scarborough College and ,
after National Service in the RAF, he trained as a Chartered Surveyor and joined the family firm of H.
C. Chapman & Son.
He joined Scarborough Round Table 88 in the late 1950s and in 1963 was one of seven Tablers to go
on the first visit to Aalten Round Table 88 in Holland, the start of a long association between the two
clubs which continues until this day. Denis became involved in the administration of the club in 1965
when he took over as Secretary for two years and followed this as Vice Chairman in 1967/68 and
Chairman in 1968/69. His Round Table horizon did not end there as he became Chairman of Area 15
for 1971/72, the very busy year in which Mick Thorpe was National President.
In addition to his time in Round Table, Denis was a founder member of the Rotary Club of
Scarborough Cavaliers in 1978 and remained a member until his death.
On leaving Round Table in 1975, Denis joined Scarborough 41 Club, but has been an infrequent
attender since the death of his wife, Mavis, in 2002.
