Report on the annual Quoits Competition held on 12 August 2026

This year there was such a good turn out for Sports Officer Darren’s annual Quoits Competition held on Wednesday 12 August 2026 from members of 41 Club, Farts and Round Table that the 18 competitors (including a member of the Beck Hole Quoits Club) had to be divided into an unprecedented 6 teams of 3.

As in previous years the competition was held at the Beck Hole Quoits Club with several members of the Club on hand to keep score and adjudicate on any infringement of the rules of play.

This year Darren had cleverly arranged for the competition to take place at exactly the same time as the recent solar eclipse. With the sun partially shrouded by cloud at times it was possible to view the eclipse without the need for special glasses resulting in some spectacular photographs.

The sun shone (apart from during the eclipse), the insect life remained dormant and the back boards took a severe pounding from misdirected quoits including one throw from a member of Round Table which caused a board to split.

After almost 2 hours of several highly competitive games and some not so competitive the winning team as last year was Immediate Past Chairman Richard and his guest Phil this time ably assisted by Gareth who is a member of Round Table and Steve Slade’s son in law.

Your reporter’s team again came joint last but took some consolation from being the only team to avail themselves of refreshment from the Birch Hall Inn during the competition in the form of pints of Beck Water courtesy of David Henderson. Perhaps this was the cause of the team’s erratic quoit throwing.

Before the insect life awoke looking for a meal the teams retired to the Birch Hall Inn for a well deserved pint or two and a pie.

Darren presented the members of the winning team with their winner’s medals together with bottles of the aptly named Eclipse beer.

Thanks as always to the members of the Beck Hole Quoits Club for hosting the event, the Birch Hall Inn for opening specially for the night and Darren for organising the event complete with a solar eclipse. What will he arrange for next year?

During the evening £150 was raised to be donated to the Quoits Club’s chosen charity the air ambulance service.

A good night’s entertainment enjoyed by all.
