Round Table 2015 AGM photos

Table’s AGM was early this year, so I got to attend two RT AGMs as Chairman of 41 Club.

I was delighted to be accompanied to the Crown Spa by several 41 Clubbers whom you can see in the photos below. We were able to congratulate new Chairman Ben Kitto on taking over the chain of office and to welcome a new member inducted into Table.

Mr Grunwell Jr won a prize which can’t be shown here but with my eyesight looked like a replica of Flamborough lighthouse. He was, apparently, “Cock of the Year”.

A good evening was had by all, especially Richard Frank who won the raffle. He generously shared his prize – a bottle of malt – at the end of the evening.

My thanks to Alex Jowett for sending me the photos. In doing so, Alex said:

Great to see you at the AGM …….. Thank you for your support of Round Table – its much appreciated.

David

Our next meeting is at Tuscany Too, 12 February 2015

We meet at Tuscany Too, on Filey Road, at our usual time of 7.30 for 8.00pm.

Simon, our Catering Officer, has informed us that there is a choice of dishes from the menu for the evening.

And that we will have the restaurant to ourselves for the evening.

Our guest speaker will be Jim Dillon, Chief Executive of Scarborough Borough Council, himself an ex-Tabler. Jim will be talking to us about the latest developments in the Borough.

I look forward to seeing you all there, at what will be a bit of a home fixture for your Chairman.

Best wishes

David

Special Table meeting: guest speaker – M S Thorpe Esq – 17 March 2015

round_table_rondel_plus_nameMick has been invited to speak at the Table meeting to be held on Tuesday, 17 March 2015.

He will be talking to Table about the history of Round Table in Scarborough. This is an appropriate subject for many reasons, not least that it is the Aalten twinning visit in September of this year.

41 Club members are most welcome to come along to support Mick and to hear him speak. I will be there, and I hope you will, too.

Please let either Mick or me know if you can attend and we will inform Table.

David

Chairman, Scarborough 41 Club 2014-15

Our next meeting is 13 November 2014: The bombardment of Scarborough 1914

Scarborough_bombardment

On 16 December 1914, German battlecruisers bombarded the town, causing great damage and the loss of 18 lives. Many more were injured. They then moved on to Whitby.

Local historian Keith Johnston will describe the events to us.

Please note: this will be an early meeting – 6.45pm for 7pm with the talk before the meal.

The meeting is at Scarborough Rugby Club.

Also note: due to the requirements of the venue, any apologies for the meeting are needed one week ahead of time, ie by the end of Thursday, 6 November.

Meeting report: Star Carr Talk

It was disappointing that only 23 members attended an entertaining and informative talk by Don Henson of York University Archaeology department at the Crescent Hotel on 9 October 2014 on the internationally important dig on our doorstep at Star Carr. There is no truth in the rumour that this dig is in Richard Coulson’s garden and that Richard lives on Flixton Island.

After several attempts Simon got his woman although in fact she turned out to be a man since the woman had decided to spite Simon by becoming pregnant and having a baby so that she did not have to attend a 41 club meeting,

We learned a new way of dating events namely years before present or BP (not Brian Pidd). Save that it has something to do with 1950 and carbon dating I am none the wiser and still appear to be the same age although 1066 and the Battle of Hastings date appear to have changed !

As our Chairman said in introducing the speaker he has learned a lot from 41 Club meetings and at the meeting of 9 October I learned from our honorary vet that you can stop cats crapping on your lawn by using lion poo and that you can buy lion poo at Waitrose.

Then a three course meal was provided by the Crescent which, to quote Tom Cathcart was seriously good tucker, and prompts the question why it has been such a long time since 41 Club last used this venue.

The meeting ended with reports from the limited number of officers present. Simon (Lockley not Ward) told a joke about a prospective member which Mick Thorpe found so funny there were some concerns for Mick’s health!
