Tom’s last bit

Dear all

I love St Patricks Day.  3 of my 4 grandparents were Irish (I hope it doesn’t show) and that is probably why.

Now I know St Patricks Day has come and gone but my mate Paddy told me he thought 17 April was the anniversary.

Be god be gorra (he said) I know I saw Tom Cathcart and half of 41 Club necking guinness in The Merchant on 17 March but I thought it was just cos TC likes guinness, so I did (and so he does).

Anyway, the said Paddy went to his opticians.

Doctor he said me eyes hurt, I can’t see far.

His optician calls him outside and points at the sun.  Can you see that Paddy he says.

Be jesus, so I can Doctor, that’s the sun.

Well said the optician, the sun is 93 million miles away.  Just how far do you want to see Paddy?

So the AGM approacheth, formal dress and all at Beiderbeckes on 18 April, i.e. Paddy’s St Patricks Day plus 1 (poor Paddy who thought that Muffin the Mule was a sexual offence).

I hope all the members of 41 Club have enjoyed this year as much as I have, and I only wish I had saved one of my few missives to take the P… out of the Welsh as well.

Heres to an excellent AGM, full details of which will be circulated to our esteemable members by Simon and Mike.

Chairman

2 prospective new members for the New 41 Club year !

* Andy Moran, who runs the Peasholm Dental Practice has asked if he might join 41 Club.

Andy is currently an honorary member of Round Table 88, having been a member for over 20 years.

I for one believe him to be a worthy candidate and deserves a rest in 41 Club.

If I do not receive any objections be the end of March, I intend to invite Andy to our AGM for him to be inducted

* Pete Moss, who was a member of Scarborough 41 Club (having been a member of Round Table 1188) has asked if he may re-join (41 Club that is), as he has seen the error of his ways!

If I do not receive any objections be the end of March, I intend to invite Pete to our AGM for him to be re-inducted.

Shingler’s bit, March 2014

I cannot comment on the last meeting as I wasn’t there. I was by the way, taking my wife out for a valentine’s meal and an overnight stay at the Talbot in Malton, which being the 13th rather than the 14th Feb. was a good deal cheaper!

Your new directories should be winging their way to you as I speak (I think).

See you all (or at least the few of you who come) at the Mayfield.

Mike.

Next meetings details, March to May 2014

MayfieldThe next meeting is at the Mayfield Hotel, Main Street, Seamer 7.30 for 8pm on Thursday 13th March. The speaker is Robin Lidster, the railway man who is talking about his latest book. The hotel has just undergone a significant refurbishment, so it will be a good opportunity to give it a try.

The AGM is at Beiderbecks on 17 April.

David Henderson’s first meeting (assuming he is successful in staving off the plethora of challengers to be Chairman next year) will be a BBQ at Ian Burnetts in late May. Date yet to be finalised

Cheers,
Simon

Shinglers bit

Regarding our members Directory. Those of you who attended the December meeting at Jeremy’s were given an up to date Directory. I was intending to send out the rest in the post but “I forgot”. So we will now send out to all those members who did not attend Jeremy’s.
As for the idea that we combine our Directory with that of Round Table, I believe we should discuss this at the next appropriate meeting as:
1. Some members might not want their personal details being circulated to members of the Round Table.
2. The Round Table list virtually every meeting venue and activity in their Directory for the year. Whereas we normally don’t know where we are more than a couple of meetings ahead. (No disrespect meant Simon).

For your information the money Round Table Sleigh collected in December plus some of the monies not distributed from the previous year needs to find worthy causes to spend it on. They are looking largely to help children and young people from a few pounds to a few hundred pounds. So if any member knows of a worthy cause (not for example, free drinks for all members at the next meeting!). Could they let me know or alternatively log onto Yorkshire Coast Radio’s website and register your suggestion there.

Mike, still your secretary, Shingler.

Upcoming meetings report

The next meeting is at Jeremys on the 13th February, 7.30 start. This is expected to be a great evening as we are having a 4 course gourmet menu with a different wine at each course, with a ‘wine man’ taking us through the wines. We need to be as accurate as possible with numbers so please can members

a) Make sure they apologise where appropriate

b) If they do apologise, then find they can make it, to let me know asap

The meeting after that is at The Mayfield Hotel at Seamer on the 13th March, 7.30 start. The hotel has just undergone substantial refurbishment and, with the kind help of Maurice Finnegan, we have been able to organise an excellent 3 course meal. Robin Lidster, the railway man, is giving an illustrated talk. As we haven’t been ‘darn sowth’ for some time and it’s a new venue, we hope that members will give the evening their full support.

Cheers,

Simon

TC’s Burns Night bit !

Well Christmas came and went. I am a few days older and not a penny richer (or wiser) but, what the Hell!

Cold January is now upon us with nothing to look forward to until Burns Night. I don’t remember celebrating Burns Night in England as a young(er) man but latterly it has been imported into our calendar and the event lightens up an otherwise dreary month.

This is what a Haggis looks like:-

haggis

Sorry, no picture of haggis available. Pic of TC instead. – Ed

Despite rumours to the contrary, Haggi (plural) are quite intelligent creatures despite coming from North of “the border”. However if you address one politely it will only answer “och aye the noo” whatever the question. Marvellous. (Glaswegian Haggi though have a more belligerent disposition. If you ask one “how are you today then, Jock?” it will reply “Who wants to know then Jimmy? Aargh”) .

It must also be said that Haggi are a bad influence on people’s habits at the table. I have seen tea-totallers who hate whisky (e.g. John White) so totally blathered with the hard stuff that they fall over and have to be helped up. A great night!

All in all, the best thing to do is to kill and eat the damn thing on Burns Night which, this year is being hosted by the Crown Spa Hotel on Thursday 23rd January. Kilts and tartan jock straps are not compulsory attire but black tie is, I believe.

This may of course be the last Burns Night celebrated in England if the mad Scots vote for independence in September. More fool they, but at least English Income Tax will be reduced as a consequence, we hope.
